World of Warcraft, like Final Fantasy XIV, is one of the longest-running MMORPGs that still requires a subscription to play. This has changed over the years, and WoW does offer a free-to-play model that allows players to progress through the Exile’s Reach campaign and quest up to level 20. With a current cap of 60, this should be sufficient for players to decide whether or not to spend their hard-earned cash on a subscription.

At the time of this article, a WoW subscription gets players access to both the Retail and Classic versions of the game. The Retail version includes all content from Vanilla through Shadowlands. Players must purchase the expansion separately if they wish to play the Dragonflight content.

Many MMORPGs have come for WoW’s crown, with very few being able to hold their own. With many going free-to-play, having a game like WoW that still requires a subscription is a rarity. But, this subscription allows Activision Blizzard to continually put out content in the form of major patches and expansions. So, if one isn’t sure, try it out for a month. If you opt to bite the bullet and dive headfirst into Azeroth, there are options to make it hurt your wallet a little less.
