World Blending in Minecraft is a process Mojang uses to implement all its intended features in its Caves & Cliffs Part 2 update. But what exactly is World Blending?

World Blending effectively removes the bottom layer of Bedrock from a pre-Caves & Cliffs Part 2 map, adding an additional layer that contains the new content. This includes places like the Deep Dark, Dark Slate Layers, and other caves.

Before Caves & Cliffs Part 2, updates manifested as unloaded chunks in Minecraft. This meant that to access the new content, you’d simply have to travel to an unloaded chunk of your world and find the added features.

However, with World Blending, your older-version worlds will simply have the new content pop in underneath the old world, extending the bottom of the world by another 64 Blocks. Unsurprisingly, World Blending hasn’t been the easiest to execute. Numerous bugs have appeared in Minecraft snapshots related to World Blending, many with hilarious results.

For instance, some snapshots have shown a player’s bottom layer of Bedrock completely removed from the game, not spawning even beneath the caves and Deep Dark. This caused players in the world to simply fall out of the world if they mined too far.

World Blending will be fully implemented and functional when the Caves & Cliffs Part 2 update releases in 2021.
