For most of the lifespan of Minecraft, hostile Mobs have spawned at any Light Level lower than 7. That said, in the Minecraft 1.18 Caves and Cliffs Part 2 update, that has changed. Gone are the days of having to spam torches to keep your builds, farms, and islands safe. Let’s take a look at the Light Levels that hostile Mobs spawn at in Minecraft.
Natural Generation
Hostile Mobs currently only naturally spawn at a Light Level of 0. This means that you will have a zero percent chance of a hostile Mob spawning within a torch’s radius. This gives players much more leeway in how often they place down torches or other light sources.
Mob Spawners
On the flipside, Mob Spawners now require a Light Level of 11 or lower to work, instead of 6 or lower. This means the player must create a light level of at least 12 to deactivate them. The best way to do this is by placing torches directly around or onto the spawner. A normal torch gives off a light level of 14.
