Ubisoft’s pirate life game Skull & Bones was announced all the way back in 2017 but has seemed to be in choppy waters multiple times since then. After a couple of delays, a release date of November 8, 2022, was eventually announced, which was then pushed back to March 9, 2023. It now seems that we’ll have to wait a bit longer, as the game has received another delay that will push things back further yet.

What is the Skull & Bones release date?

According to a Ubisoft press release detailing the company’s financial targets for the 2023-24 fiscal year, the release of Skull and Bones will be pushed back to “early 2023-24.” In this case, Ubisoft’s fiscal year begins in April, so the slated arrival of Skull and Bones seems to be sometimes around the middle of 2023. That said, plans can always change, and in the case of Skull and Bones, no schedule ever seems to be set in stone. Overall, this document paints a difficult picture for Ubisoft, as it also reveals a reduction in the company’s financial targets, as well as the cancellation of three unannounced games.

What gameplay has been shown so far?

Most of what we know about how Skull and Bones will actually play comes from an extended presentation during a July 2022 Ubisoft Forward. The showcase was littered with new details about the upcoming pirate game. It can be played either solo or with a multiplayer crew, but your activities will be the same in both cases. You can sail the seas, battle enemy ships controlled by both AI and other players, hunt for resources, complete challenges, and participate in special events. We already know about one of those: a politically charged overfishing event will be added to the game around launch. We also got a bit of information about the game’s post-launch roadmap in the same showcase.
